Social Networking ... what is your favorite site?

Social Networking - What is your favorite site?

Social network analysis (from Wikipedia)
An example of a social network diagram. The node with the highest betweenness centrality is marked in yellow.

Social network analysis (related to network theory) has emerged as a key technique in modern sociology. It has also gained a significant following in anthropology, biology, communication studies, economics, geography, information science, organizational studies, social psychology, and sociolinguistics as well as a popular topic of speculation and study.

People have used the social network metaphor for over a century to connote complex sets of relationships between members of social systems at all scales, from interpersonal to international. In 1954, J. A. Barnes started using the term systematically to denote patterns of ties that cut across the concepts traditionally used by the public and social scientists: bounded groups (e.g., tribes, families) and social categories (e.g., gender, ethnicity).

What Social Networks do you belong to and would you mind sharing what your favorite is? There are so many sites available ... new ones coming up each and every day it is difficult to decided which one to get involved in.

So, some basic questions?
1. Which is your favorite and wy?
2 How many are you involved in and how often do you participate?
3. What is your purpose for being involved; friendships, prompting a product?, promoting your blog?
4. If any of this is too personal - just disregardl

Thanks This will be a very interesting and helpful survey to many of us involved with Social Networking.

Thanks for your comments and congtribution

Holy smoke, are there THAT many? I suspect there are more -- were the four book sites on there? I didn't think to look.

I feel very overwhelmed now...

I'm listed on a lot of social networks, but use mostly twitter, facebook, and myspace, generally for the purpose of listing my blog. Thanks for stopping by my blog through the June Comment Challenge. Love your aprons, they are gorgeous.

Yikes that's scary! Info overload, lol. I am a member of twitter, linkedin and facebook. Except for linkedin, I use them almost daily to connect with friends. I also feed my blog to them and find a few new reader that way.
There has been a strange phenomenon the past two days though. I have gotten like 100+ new twitter followers each day. Don't know where they are coming from. I have done nothing differently. It is kind of annoying actually to get so many emails, lol.
Favorite? facebook. Found tons of great old friends that way.

Hi before I answer your post question, you had asked my about home schooling. No I don't home school my kids. I think my kids like it that I am home. We had a financial scare last fall and thought I would have to go back to work and my oldest actually said she wanted me to stay home.

Lets see: I do Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Mom Bloggers Club, Twittermoms.com. I also belong to a few others, but I don't visit them alot.

I do Mom Bloggers Club and twittermoms. com to promote my blog, but the others are just for fun.

I have to pull myself away from the computer to get work done:)

I like using twitter and facebook. Facebook is more for personal relationships and Twitter is more about building connections with other bloggers and marketing folks.

I think my favorite may be twitter. I use it to check in with friends, promote my blog, etc. I belong to quite a few sites, but none that I use quite as much as twitter.

I use Twitter for networking, Facebook and Myspace for keeping in touch with Family and Friends. I just don't get the who Facebook for networking idea... or I've just been too lazy to really look into it.

Hmm I am involved in Facebook, Twitter and Myspace - I prefer myspace but everyone abandoned it for Facebook so I spent a majority of my time there - FB and MS I use to reconnect with known friends and twitter I use for blog promoting and connecting with random folk. :)

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment for Harriets comment challenge :) I really appreciate it, and enjoyed reading your blog.

My answers to the questions:

1. Which is your favorite and why?
Twitter because it's probably the most popular and the most people use it.

2 How many are you involved in and how often do you participate?
My blog auto-tweets my 3 daily tea reviews from my blog. I often tweet myself daily as well.

3. What is your purpose for being involved; friendships, prompting a product?, promoting your blog?
All of the above. I have friends on Twitter, and I love meeting new people on Twitter (especially fellow tea lovers!!), and it does help promote my Tea Review Blog and other internet ventures.

Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words and compliments, I enjoyed your blog as well!

I have way too many. Facebook, Twitter, Typepad, Plurk, Myspace, Blogger, Vox... and the list could go on and on. I live in a small country town, i don't drive and at the moment our phones not on, so i do all my keeping in contact via being online. I spend way too much time on some of these sites, well sometimes it looks like that but many i have them all linked with each other, so if i update my blog it will update facebook, twitter etc.

Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog

The only social netwoking I use regurlarly is Twitter. I think it combines simplicity and efficiency in one, and it is a good way to promote my blog entries too. FriendFeed is also useful as it feeds off every social networking site. I don't need to update this one which is good.
