Brick Manufacturing Company in Mexico

On a recent visit to Mexico this was the tour of a Brick Manufacturing Company. The bricks were fired in a handmade kiln and then torn down, rebuilt with each firing. Very, very interesting. Have any of you experienced this?

She is so darling and will do any little pose I suggest. She is sweet, bright and loves to model for Over The Top Aprons.. Isn't she a doll!? First off ... This is me .... Corline ... Owner/Designer of www.overthetopaprons.com. It is time again for a disclaimer. Most people just assume that I am the darling model of the aprons on my website.

Here is the cute model ... Syd .... University Student, premed student ... marvelous model for www.overthetopaprons.com Our staff calls her 'Our Top Model'. (Next post I will share with you our 'Top Mini Model').

I started my website about one year ago and people have been very, very supportive which I sincerely appreciate. When I decided to do a website I was actually discouraged about the idea from several people. Their recommendation was to go on some selling site like Etsy or Art Fire .... both wonderful sites but for me (because of my age ... and young in spirit! ) I decided it was now or never. I opted for the now. I am so glad that I did and I would encourage anyone debating about starting their own website to go ahead. The cost is minimal depending on the hosting site you choose and if you can maintain the site by yourself.

I am very pleased with Pappa Shoppe for my hosting site; they are very personal, always available and very quick to assist you and walk you through any problems you may have. They are always adding new free templates with a range of styles. I am definitely still in the learning stage but if anyone has any questions about Pappa Shoppe or just starting a website I would be glad to share what I know.

I will be giving more updates of what I am doing, resources I use ... answering some questions that my customers and viewers have ask. If I can be of help to any of you, please do not hesitate to drop a comment and where I can get in touch with you. Have fun with whatever you decide to do ... go with your passion!

So, Just what is Miss-D'Lish? Lets see what Jessica has to say about that! "Welcome to my world! I am constantly oooozing with ideas so I had to find myself a little outlet that best matches my favorite skills ... experimenting in the kitchen and being a social butterfly! Who wants to write for a website from 1 point of view??? Not me...I thought why not make a place my readers are the writers with me...heck ya...and so...Miss D'Lish was born! Jessica likes graphic design and thought it would be fun to design a fun place to talk, share recipes and the "dish" on a fun topic like the cooking world. One of the things that gave her the idea was a lot of her friends take pictures of meals they made for their families for dinner. She would then use these ideas for dinners of her own and thought it would be great to create a place where everyone can all share thoughts, ideas and recipes ... The goal for the website is to make a fun entertaining place that people will WANT to come to weekly or better yet daily."

Jessica is the sole inspiration for Miss D'Lish but she admits to having tons of advice and help. She tries to connect with other related businesses or bloggers and she truly believes in helping each other to spread the word which has been fun and effective geting to know new people and businesses. Being involved in Facebook has been a good social media source her readers are her writers...they send her recipes, reviews on restaurants, cooking products, videos, pictures...its has been a lot of fun.

I ask Jessica how she felt starting this new adventure during these economical time. Her advise: "I think it depends on what you are doing. If you have to make a big investment and your products are not for everyone it may be better to start slow. Blogging is FREE! The only money I've spent was on (2) domain names. I get prizes donated sometimes and I'm optimistic as my readership grows I'll get some advertisers and maybe over time will be able to sell products too. I suggest careful planning and spending wisely...if at all."

To find sources for her business, Jessica googles all sort of things and looks at peoples websites, sometimes finds people on Facebook or through images on blogs. She typically shoots an email, ask questions, introduces herself, emails friends that have computer skills or blog knowledge...questions, questions, questions...key to learning and growing.

Family is very important to Jessica. You will see some of her family in the pictures at the beginning of this post. She expresses how wonderful her family is. Her mother and grandparents and other relatives were always creative, painters, artists, they would sew or quilt or cross stitch. Her mother always cooked every meal so naturally as Jessica is now cooking for her son, Nate. Jessica said that she has always been creative and has a knack for business so she tries to intertwine it all. One of her other talents was modeling. (Picture show above). Lately she finds that her corporate America job puts her in a tired grumpy mood and decided there has to be a way to do something that makes her happy...so...she is trying out her ideas very carefully in her free time till she can just be happy only doing things she loves!

Val has a passion for fabrics, color and design. Her inspirations come from following current trends, popular colors,and textiles. From these sources the creative ideas just seem to pour in. Being a seamstress for over 30 years has given her extensive skills ranging from Custom Quilting, Designing and Creating Boutique Children's Clothing, and teaching sewing classes.

Val has been married for 20 Years, has 2 children, Ben 11 and Madison 9. Residing with the family is a list of favorite animals.

Over the years Val's friends recognized her abilities in designing childrens clothing and encouraged her to pursue her Boutique line for kids. Val loves the freedom to create fun, unique clothing and hopes other enjoys them as well.

People Affect You - for good or for bad!

A common expression we often hear is that "Peole come into our lives for a reason, a seson, or a lifetime". We especally hear this when someone has passed on or when a relationships comes to an end. What ever the situation, how ever long the time, the people you meet, the people you are around, the people that come and go in and out of your life leaves an impression on you which brings about a change ... you are never the same.

In our lifetime, there are always people who leave their mark within us. Whatever kind of mark they leave, whether it is good or bad, these people seem to affect our lives in one way or another. The affect may be great joy or great pain. But generally speaking, people come into our lives for a reason. Some times, it could be that they are here to help us solve a problem, teach us a lesson, teach us more abut ourselves. Sometimes people pass in and out of our lives very quickly, others are friends for a lifetime. These are friends to be cherised. These are the people who grow and learn with us and continue to inspire us and make our lives more interesting, creating a greater depth wthin us.

I had a very close frined in High School; she was quite pretty, very bright, intelligent ... in fact she was the school Valedictorian! I was more social and considered that aspect of my life more important than studying. In our senior year we had a Biology class together. My beautiful, intelligent friend tutored me through and I got a B+ and she of course got an A. That one class made a big impact on my life. I found out that studying could be fun and rewarding. Infact, when I went to college I got on the Dean's List for good grades. Imagine that! To this day I love learning, reading and gaining new knowledge.

Is anyone else like me? .... Where has January gone? I was determined to get off to a good start, but January is almost over and I am not even caught up with 2009. Actually it is a good thing because my business has kept been to busy to 'get organized' ... but there is so much I want todo and I feel should be done. And, one of the things is to give some attention to my poor, sad, blog. But, I am determined, I will get there .... maybe in February ... anyone else out there that is feeling the same way?

Where have the days gone? 11 days into the New Year and it seems like it is buzzing by. Between the Sewing Machine and the Computer it seems like there is little time for anything else. My goal is to Get Organized ...... I am trying, I am trying, but it seems like I am just putting out fires.

My mind is swarming with new ideas for my website: www.overythetopaprons.com .... adding some new products, bringing in a very skilled artist who make beautiful TuTus and that is just a beginning.

And of course with each new year it means getting your tax information ready and facing the reality of profit or no profit ....(lets just hope it is profit!)

Tracy Cornell, owner and designer of all products made in her shop: Braggin' Rights, lives in Texas and has been married to her wonderful and supportive husband for 13 years.

Tracy started 'crafting' when she was very young, encouraged by her mother to always be creative; making gifts, creating things, and using her imagination. During her high school years she took a few art classes, submitted a portfolio to the Cleveland Institute of Arts and was accepted. Her focus was charcoal drawing, pastels, and watercolors. However, being young she did not follow through with this; so,every
thing she does now she either learned from her mom, or was self taught.

Tracy takes pride in making high quality items. . "I feel that the products that you deliver reflect on you as a person; both my products and character are of high quality. Here are the questioned I presented to Allison that I would like to share with you; it will give you an insight into her personality, her passion, and her business that I know we will all enjoy reading and learn from.

1. What motivated you, led you to designing this business, Aspiring Couture?

Something inside me finally clicked and I just knew that this idea that I have been putting off for years just had to get started. I was not in a very good place in my life, and basically needed a outlet; I needed a way to create what I wanted. so, i just decided to see where it would take me. From there it became more realistic, and I just kept creating and creating. That's just what I love!

2. Is it a 'self' effort or do you have a partner or team?

This is a sole project I am doing. Sometimes I think it would be beneficial to have a partner or something like that as it can get overwhelming and if you don't have someone to communicate to, it makes it quite rough,. But, as of now it is a sole thing!

3. What is the goal for your business at this time? What is your projection?

I think pretty big when it comes to ideas, goals and dreams! The goal is to get some of the designers I am representing into magazines, their work in movies,or whatever they want! At the same time it is ti find new beginning designers and do the same thing with getting them in mags, etc,.

But, I guess as of now it would be for Aspiring Couture to gain credibility for the products and exchange level of the company. I want to see Aspiring Couture grow into a successful company I believe in my purpose behind it, and feel that it is something people can relate to and hopefully will!

4. Are there any mistakes, successes, that you would like to share so we can learn from you.

As of now I have probably made mistakes,but have yet to fully figure out what those are! But, I don't really care about that because every mistake I have made has let me to the right way of doing something, so they are not really mistakes then, right?

As for successes, I guess the main thing I knew was that if I just continually outflow something will come in. I know that if I continually put the word out there, someone is bound to see it! That is the main thing that has kept me going.
I definitely know that if I have a rough day, sending out e-mails, posting blogs, etc. will just about handle it.

5. What encouragement would you give to other women who want to go into their ownb business? How would you advise getting started?

I would say ABSOLUTELY do it! I completely support anyone who wants to start their own thing and create their own company!

There are probably a lot of different ways to go about starting up, ad I think every person needs to create something that works for them and is easy for them! But, the one thing that I would advise is to just outflow to anyone and everyone like mad! You have to make yourself known if you ever want anyone to know who you are. It has to come from you though. Block messages that are not sincere, this really upsets people.

You may think people know you because you promoted a bit, but the truth is we see about 200 things a day, and unless it is memorable,m we tend to forget about it! I definitely recommend starting a blog, twitter, facebook, and any other social medial channels that would be relative to your business. Oh, and be a real person!!! Do9n't only promote your product or your website. Show your thoughts and be involved with other people! I like getting to know real people, not just the blog!

6. Do you feel the economical time is a good time to get started or would you suggest waiting until things in our country/internationally get settled down?

I don't necessarily think it's a good time ti start a business, but I don't think anything should stop someone from living their dream. The economy is going to go up and down, but it is just a matter of being above the bad economy with some really amazing people skills, selling skills, and marketing! Ya, you have to work harder,but it's worth it. Whatever you do though, I would never suggest holding out from living the life you want for anything!

7. Where do you reach out and find the sources for your business?

I don't even know! It is literally anywhere that I see something that inspires me. I follow tons of blogs for inspiration as well as to learn from them!@ I gather inspiration from other blogs (but never take anything from them! If I do, I give full credit with a link back to the person's blog for more info) I also find inspiration in my daily living and different experiences. Other than that,m it is all about surfing twitter, and other social networks to find out what readers want from me as a blogger and to deliver that!

8. What do you point to in your growing up/your childhood that brought you to where you are today? Family, education, interests?

Well, everything! I obviously learned from every part of my life as I continue to do. One main thing I have realized recently is that you never stop learning. The more knowledge you have on any and all subjects the better you can be in many different situations.

As far as past experiences-my dad always owned his own business and I always knew I wanted to do the same., (Doing what, was an entirely different topic!) I had taken sewing classes forever and had a great passion for that. I went to a very good private school where I was able to test myself and become even more independent than I already was, but with the knowledge to back up my dreams.

I have always been a very productive and creative person which my parents really supported. When I was 13 I had an intense schedule for even an adult. I carried that with e and knew how to work long hours as well as how to produce a product. So, all of those things really did define me as a person.

Another Question - Have you benefited from doing Blog contests, give-a-way, product reviews?

Question? Do you benefit from doing reviews, contests give-a-ways?, product give-a-ways? These are just a few of the products I have given away to have my product promoted on blogs for reviews, free give-a-way, etc.

The reviewers all did a great job, the pictures were great. I have no complaints with the write up or how the reviews were handled. All in all I have given away a total of 14, yes 14 products since the beginning of the year ... that means the cost of making the product, (I am not counting my hours which were considerable considering I had to spend time picking out, ordering the fabrics, cutting out, sewing the aprons, and then paying for the postage for sending the aprons to the contest winners).

I know the idea is great, I appreciate all the hard work and energy of the Blog owners in writing the reviews, setting up the photos, running the contest, and notifying the winners. I do not have a complaint of how the give-a-ways were handled; everyone has done an excellent job of handling things.

My concern is that perhaps give-aways may not be the best for me. I have had my website looked over for content and pricing -- everything seems to be in line. But I have not had one sell from any of the contests.

I am just curious, has anyone had the same experience or has the Give-A-Way contests worked for you? I would love to hear from you and any advise, positive or negative, what has worked for you, if you have some better approaches to promoting? I feel, looking back, that for me it would have been better to take the $200 I spent for the give-a-ways and put it into paid advertising? what is your opinion?

I would love to hear from you, I am very open to learn from any suggestions you have to offer as far as paid advertisement vrs. "free" reviews/give-away-contests, product review with a product for promotion Looking forward to any and all ideas!

Google Pages .... How to get to the top? Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on how to get to the top of the list or at least on the first pages of listing on Google. I have been there several times and then it drops down. Does anyone know the mechanics of this? Is it how you use your keywords -- placing them at the beginning of your paragraph?

At this point in our lives my husband is retired and he is completely supportive and my grown children say "way to go mom!" and cheer me on.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting out?

Do you have any ideas for a container garden that you would like to share? Any experience, good or bad? I live in Northern California, just outside of Sacramento and I am considering a SMALL container garden, preferably up high enough so I do not have to bend. What would you suggest I should start with, what is successful? tomatoes, lettuce, onions, ? I would love your input for inspiration. Looking forward to hearing from you!

We have our chickens, 5 chickens and faithfully, 5 eggs a day. It is still a thrill when we go out to collect ... big event!! You can tell we are definitely "country folks" ....

We've all fallen in love with the gorgeous aprons given generously as prizes at our Launch Party. But just who is the brains behind the frills? Meet 74 years young, grandmother & businesswoman,Corline, who says she often gets asked if she is the model in her promo shots? She's even had to put out a disclaimer that she's not!

Corline, how did 'Over The Top Aprons' come about?

About 3 years ago while I was watching a talk show featuring a woman who made aprons, I thought to myself, I can do that and maybe even a little better; it was at that moment 'Over The Top Aprons' was "born". My specialty is designing/creating aprons that express styles for today's woman and child. The aprons are chic, elegant, romantic, classic, and at times a bit fun and funky. I use designer fabrics and ribbons and strive for quality workmanship. I love color, fashion,and fabric."

What gives the Aprons their 'sassy' point of difference?

The idea for the aprons is to have them be practical and durable enough for everyday ware while allowing the woman to express her individual style; All of the aprons are machine washable(cool water). When a woman puts on her own unique apron I want her to feel special whether she is cooking dinner for her family, cleaning the house or entertaining friends. When she puts on the apron that expresses who she is she not only feels pretty she feels just a little bit "over the top"!"

And now, for the most important question!
What '5 things can't you DO without in your handbag'?

1. Keys (we live in the country and a car is an essential)
2. Wallet (always prepared with cash and a credit card)
3. Sunglasses (glare is difficult on the eyes and we live in Sunny California)
4. Cosmetic case (oh, my, I need a touch up every now and then!)
5. Business card holder (You never know when an opportunity will present itself to share what you enjoy doing)

Still Jealous? I Thought So.

I love winning stuff. Can you guess what I love more then winning stuff? That's right...winning really cute goodies that I actually want, that I need. Yesterday I received my first bloggy win. SassyMamas had their launch party last weekend and I scored some pretty cool stuff.

Over The Top Aprons provided prizes and I was the lucky winner of this adorable black and white poodle apron. J-bug is so gonna love it...but I'm making her wait until her birthday! *Insert evil laugh* Seriously. How stinking cute is that apron? You can't see all the detail from this pic so go ahead and click on it for more pics. There is a sweet little pocket and a pleat in the front on the skirt. (Every apron needs a little twirl action.) The apron arrived in a sweet black tulle bag tied off with a pink satin bow!

So I spent a little time (okay fine...I spent a lot of time) on their site and I fell in love with all the sassy skirt aprons. And the full aprons. Alright, I fell in love with all of them. Aren't they so cute? The white Bath Apron says "Mommy & Me." Precious isn't it? I have to admit the ruffled skirt aprons are my favorite and they look so fun. The Apron Goddesses - by Julia. If you have not had the opportunity to be introduced to the blog: The Apron Goddesses - then here is a good time to not only get acquainted with the blog but also with Julia the developer of The Apron Goddesses concept!

"My blog, the Apron Goddesses was inspired by a few factors. I needed an apron since I was getting destroyed in the kitchen. I saw a few other blogs where the authors were showing their aprons. So I knew I was not alone in my appreciation of aprons. I wanted to find some great aprons makers. Hence, The Apron Goddesses was born."

The Apron Goddesses promotes apron wearing and sharing. In Julie's own words, "I want this blog to be the place ladies come to find hand crafted aprons from high quality seamstresses. With apron give-a-ways every week and features on ladies wearing aprons there is something new going on all the time." It is a very informative and fun site - and hey, we can all join in the fun and send Julie a picture of ourselves wearing a favorite apron.

Julie also has another blog called Our Simple Life. This blog consists of written and/or pictorial essays about life on our property in California. Since we live on five acres in a rural area there is lots to do. We have horses, chickens, cats, dog, fish and five very active kids running around. Since my brother-in-law's family lives next door there is always something afoot.

I ask Julie how the got started in blogging. "The first blog I read was The Natural and Green Parenting blog I was looking for safe bottles for my kids and found it there. After that another friend shared her blog with me in the fall of 2008. I started up ny own blog a few months later because I had to keep up my writing."

Julie graduated with a degree in Botany in 1993 from U.C. Davis and worked in environmental consulting for the past 13 years. The jobs in environmental consulting had dried up with the slow economy. I was extremely motivated to write in a format that was creative and basically uncensored with the blog Writing for consulting is dry and scientific and after more than a decade of formal structure the freedom with blog writing was a blessed relief.

Just a little more of Julie and her family .... Julie has know her husband, Mike, since she was 12. She bought her firt horse from his mom when she was in the 8th grade and was friends with her now mother-in-aw before she even had a glimmer of Mike as a future husband.

One of the major influences on Julie which lead her to her love and interest today as an adult, was John Ramos, the owner of the horse stable where she boarded her horse when she was a kid. She has horses and has ridden competitively at the State level for years. Julie said, "John had confidence in me and gave me huge responsibilities as a young adult. This made me independent and self sufficient. When I fist met John he was in his late 60's. He was a tiny Spanish man with a quick temper but kind heart. John 'assigned" me horses to ride in exchange for boarding my horse."

Julie's goal for 2009 is to earn her Bronze medal in dressage. This is a national award dressage riders earn through competition. One must qualify with scores at different riding levels - she is only one score away from her medal!

Julie expressed that being outside riding horses when she was young gave her an appreciation of the vegetation on the trails. She attributes this early exposure to the natural environments at a young age helped prime her to major in Botany in college which led to working in environmental consulting.

She was also encouraged in her writing by several English and Literature teachers recognizing where her strengths were and guiding her in the right direction.

Currently her biggest supporter is her husband, at times a sarcastic tease, but for the most part she knows he is proud of her accomplishments!

Julie admits to being a creature of habit, liking structure and a definite routine. There is an order to her day with the kids and she likes to keep on a schedule. She finds that her kids are best when their days are structured. They know what to expect and are happy that way. I want to give them the support and confidence to be highly effective people.

You ask me why did I choose to write about Julie? Beside being very interesting as an individual, she is unique, she is special, she is one of a kind.

Personality Feature: Nathalie Brault

I would like to introduce Nathalie --- where does she live? St-Calixte, Quebec. She lives in a small northern village, which she adores, and where there is a lot of snow in winter.

Nathalie has a great interest in upcycled, meaning, she takes used but in good conditions items and make something new with it. For example, her aprons are made with shirts and/or sheets. Her teawallets are made with fabric leftovers. Her tuques are made from sweater sleeves. She even has some necklaces made of vintage bobines. Her motto is reuse, recycle, recuperate.

I asked Nathalie if there were any influences in her young growing up years that she felt might have contributed to this upcycled interest that she has today.

Her mother was a hairdresser and her dad was a musician, so creativity runs in her family. While growing up she was with her mom at the hairdressing salon where she played for hours with wigs and curlers pretending they were ladies that she was taking care of. She use to dress her Barbies with Kleenexes and tape, so she did not need much to be happy. Even at that age she was recuperating fabric to dress her dolls and was aware of the ecology and kept everything for a later usage.

Her first success in selling her creative items was on consignment and this followed with selling on the net in her Etsy shop and on Artfire. She is just at the point of developing her work to be better know and her future goal is to make a living from her creations.

Natalie works very hard to try and get her shops known. For new artists starting out she would encourage you to never give up no matter what people may tell you; work really hard because it's a very competitive world and it is very important to believe in yourself.

Personality Feature: Another On Line Mom

Another On Line Mom …

May I introduce to you, Jennifer, a lovely SAHM, married to her hubby four years and they have two children, Mimi and Tommy.

I asked Jennifer how she got into blogging. “At first it was a way to document my children’s lives. I considered it to be “online scrapbooking”. It was also a way for my out of town family to keep up with the children. Now, I use it to make a few extra dollars each month. I do write about 4 or 5 sponsored post a month. I use the dollars to buy FOR ME (which many mom’s forget to do!). I use it for makeup, pedicures or a new pair of jeans!

Now that sounds like good sound advise! Ladies you may want to consider do this for yourselves!

Jennifer is a “Southern Gal”, brought up wearing pearls, never leaving the house without wearing makeup, and always having a fresh baked goodie on hand to offer guests! Jennifer loves cooking, especially baking cookies!! She loves getting recipes from Southern Living and AllReceipes.com. Also, she loves cooking many of her dinners in the crock pot because with her two young kids in the house she finds that she does not have much time to prepare meals.

Growing up she always wanted to be a mom. She had a good childhoood home life, filled with tradtitions and she couldn’t wait to make a “home” for her husband and children.

Some of her favorite blogs are Angry Julie and Barely Keeping It All Together. These do sounds interesting, maybe we will have to check these out.

Jennifer is definitely representative of a lovely Southern mother for today’s generation. It was a joy for me to learn just a little bit more about Jennifer and for you , you just might want to pop on over to her blog, Another On Line Mom and see the latest that Jennifer is up to.
